Mindfulness (paying attention in a particular way without judging) attracts increasing attention with more and more research evidence regarding its effectiveness. It teaches skills and activities to stop worrying about the past or the future and focus on now … helping to stop negative thought and behaviour patterns, and find how greater calm can help unlock our potential. Mindfulness is proven to reduce stress and anxiety and build resilience – including for those with issues such as ADHD.
It is estimated that one in every ten of 5-16 year-olds (Centre for Mental Health) experiences mental health problems – that’s three in every classroom. Schools are now tasked through OFSTED to adopt a ‘whole school approach’ to these matters. However schools are themselves struggling with staffing and stress.
In their #YoungMindsMatter week, Huffington Post reported on a survey conducted on their behalf: a third of parents said they worried they would ‘look bad’ if their child had a mental health problem.
So while the mental health of children and young people is rightly now receiving the attention it needs, schools and families are not always equipped to provide the right support. Access to services such as CAMHs is difficult, and not always appropriate to a young person’s needs. Supporting young minds earlier and finding different solutions has to be the priority.
What I offer is Mindfulness coaching programmes targeted to meet the specific needs of individual schools, families and young people. I bring my own experience and practice of Mindfulness along with all the knowledge and experience of child development, direct work and family support I have developed over the last twenty years.
Mindful Schools: After introducing the principles of Mindfulness to school staff, I deliver a tailor-made programme to support your school. Evidence demonstrates Mindfulness in schools helps improve levels of attainment, improve student behaviour and emotional wellbeing, and reduce stress in staff.
Mindful Families: For families that are struggling with issues such as the emotional and behavioural development of their children, and the pressures of modern family life. I provide a tailored programme specific to your needs providing the tools and support you need to build a brighter future.
School Holiday Workshops: School holidays can be stressful and activities hard to find. Give yourself and your young people a break by booking them into a small-group activity where they can have fun and learn skills which they can come home and teach to you!
